This is the very well-known pepper from Syria, often called Halaby. While rated as a mild pepper (10 000-23 000 SHU), we often find them much spicier! The dried and ground peppers have a rich fruity, smoky flavour.  Plants grow to about 60-90cm (2-3 feet) tall. We dry ours and grind them - if you want to be try a traditional recipe, let them dry in the sun, then mix with some sea salt and olive oil!

Start peppers indoors 8-10 weeks before last frost. Tip: soak your peppers in warm water for a few hours before planting! Plant 1/2-1 cm (1/4”-1/2”) deep in flats and germinate at 30 degrees C. Before transplanting, harden off by reducing water and temperature for 2-3 days and then transplant outdoors 30-45 cm (12”-18”) apart in rows 45-90 cm (15”-36”) apart.
