Asclepias syriaca
Host plant for monarch larva, common milkweed has pale pink flower clusters and grows to about 60-120 cm (23-47 in) tall. Flowers are edible if blanched a few times but only a few should ever be harvested to leave enough to create seeds for the following year. Milky sap is bitter and poisonous. Sow seed at a depth of twice the diameter of the seed. A cold period before sowing is very helpful for good germination. Place seed in an airtight and dry container in the freezer for a week and then sow at a depth of twice the size of the seed. Keep in a sunny window until the plants have 2 sets of true leaves. Harden off by putting outside during the day in a shady protected area. Plant in place once all danger of frost has passed. An essential addition to the butterfly garden. Blooms in July. Medium dry to dry soils. Native. 0.38 g Approximately 50 seeds.
